The Bay Side of South Padre Island
Most of South Padre Island’s rentals face the Gulf. The bay side is the other half of the island and it suits a different trip. The water is flat, so kayaking and paddleboarding are things you do off the shoreline rather than things you drive to. Fishing is better and closer. The sunsets happen in front of you instead of behind the building.
What you give up is the surf and the walk straight onto the sand. The beach is a short drive across the island rather than out the door, so a bay-side stay generally means using the car or the free island shuttle more than a beachfront one does.
The bay side is where the island's water activities launch from. Dolphin tours and fishing charters run out of the marinas, parasailing and watersports operate off the flat water, and the Laguna Madre Nature Trail boardwalk runs out over the wetlands a short way up the bay.
On land, Sea Turtle Inc. and the Birding and Nature Center are both close, and the Nature Center is on the bay itself — this side of the island is where the birding is. For dinner, the bayside restaurants along the water are the ones with the sunset view; the rest of the island's restaurants and bars run up Padre Boulevard.
