South Padre Island Travel Safety Tips

We at SPI Rentals want our guests to enjoy a Texas trip of a lifetime that is fun, memorable, and safe, so we’ve put together some South Padre Island travel safety tips to help ensure you have nothing to worry about!

Read the Signs and the Flags Posted

For most of the year, the seas that surround our island home are quiet and calm, but there are times when the opposite is true. South Padre Island safety is very important to us, and as such, our beaches post a warning system, a series of colorful flags to help figure out if it is safe to dip your toes in the water. These flags will be posted at the beach entrances and are translated as follows:

  • Green: Conditions calm
  • Yellow: Calm to moderate water
  • Red: Heavy surf, dangerous currents
  • Double Red: The water is CLOSED, and swimming is not allowed
  • Purple or Blue: Dangerous marine life present

Care should always be taken when swimming, even with a green flag present.

Learn How to Recognize and Escape a Rip Current

Rip currents are narrow channels of fast-moving water that can pull you away from shore. They can sometimes (but not always) be recognized by the water’s color (darker or murkier than normal). If you get caught in a rip current, the first rule is to stay calm. Panicking will make the situation worse. Steps to escape:

  • Signal for help by facing the shore, waving your arms, and yelling loudly for help
  • Do not fight the pull of the current
  • Swim parallel with the beach
  • Once you have escaped the narrow current of water, swim at a diagonal angle, heading back to the shore
  • Tired? Take a break and just float until you regain your energy

Wildlife Safety: Jellyfish, Sea Turtles, and Coastal Animals

Jellyfish and Portuguese man o’ wars aren’t exactly deadly, but if you get stung by either, it doesn’t feel so great, so pay attention to those flags. Although sea turtles are fun to spot during your South Padre Island travel adventures, they are endangered, so please avoid feeding, touching, or otherwise interacting with them. Alligators are rarely seen in the saltwater surf, but sharks have been spotted during the warmer months, so keep your eyes peeled.

Ask a Local

Is South Padre Island safe?

This is a question you may be asking yourself right now, and the answer is yes, our island home is safe. Ask a local, and they will tell you how safe it is and whether there is a reason you shouldn’t be getting in the water. Listen to them.
