South Padre Island is one of those places you visit where you find yourself spending more time outside than in. The natural landscape, pristine beaches, and the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center encourage this outdoor lifestyle, as do we at SPI Rentals. Our homes are comfortable and luxurious, but our island is wild and thrilling, and a visit to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center will be something you never forget!
Experience Native Wildlife on a 50-Acre Reserve
The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is renowned for the large number of birds that call it home, but there are other species of wildlife you will be able to see during your visit. Delicate butterflies flit about, bottlenosed dolphins frolic in its waters, and yes, it is also an alligator sanctuary, home to “Big Padre” and other juvenile gators. Offering a different experience every time we visit, we encourage guests to include multiple visits in their itinerary so they don’t miss anything special.

Guided Tours & Daily Educational Events
Over 300 bird species call the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center their home, both migratory and year-round, and their guided birding tours are always quite popular. Groups of no more than 10 are led by knowledgeable and personable Naturalist Educators on a monthly basis, so reserving in advance may be in your best interest.

- Cost: $17 per person, includes general admission
- Ages 13+ only
In addition to guided birding tours, the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center offers daily educational events, including summer camps for kids and alligator and snake talks.

- Snake Talks: 2:30 PM Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Main Attractions
We should say that the 3300 feet of boardwalk that leads guests through coastal wetlands is the main attraction, but if we were to be honest, it’s the alligators that draw the most people. The sanctuary provides a safe place to live for juvenile alligators and Big Padre. Unfortunately, Big Padre’s mate, Lady Laguna, passed away in 2025.
