Angler’s Journey to South Padre Island, TX

The sea waters that surround our South Padre Island homes provide entertainment, relaxation, employment, and quite often, our nightly dinners, and if you find joy while sitting on the other end of a fishing pole, your Texas vacation on SPI is destined to be a dream come true. Offering all manner of fishing experiences, including fishing from the shore that is located just steps away from the back door of our vacation rentals in South Padre Texas, we want to ensure that your trip is a successful one. This guide to an angler’s journey to South Padre Island is how we do it, offering tips, hints, suggestions, and comfortable lodging to come home to at the end of every fishing trip!

Day 1: A Seafood Dinner on your First Night

After traveling all day to get here, there won’t be enough time to grab a pole and wet your line before the sun sets but there is plenty of time to sample what the waters provide with a seafood dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants. F&B SPI, 3109 Padre Boulevard, isn’t strictly seafood, it does offer red meat and chicken as well, but the catch of the day is guaranteed to have been swimming around the sea just hours before it lands on your plate! Offering a peek at what you can expect to bring home in your cooler after each day of fishing, you will soon discover why our island is regarded as one of the nation’s top fishing destinations.

Day 2: Let the Angling Begin

There are a multitude of ways you can plan out your fishing adventures, but for today’s purposes we are going to start with the simplest methods and work our way up to the biggest and most thrilling expedition. You can plant your pole in the sand at the shoreline, sink into a lawn chair with your cooler beside you, and let the angling begin.

A fishing license is needed and can be purchased online or at many sporting good stores in town, and it is best to avoid the more crowded beaches both for safety purposes and because all the people scare away the fish! If a cold beer is what you need for hydration purposes as you cast your line into salty waters, rest assured that alcohol is allowed on the beach, but glass containers are not, so stick to the cans to avoid catching a fine. The fish you can catch from the shore will more than likely be redfish, speckled trout, and flounder.

Day 3: Piers to a Good Catch

Fishing from a pier can be your favorite way to fish, and the Queen Isabella State Fishing Pier, the original causeway that connected our island to the mainland, is one of our favorite fishing piers. Open 24 hours, it doesn’t cost anything to explore the pier, but there is a fee to fish from it, and you will need a fishing license for this; as a matter of fact, you should just purchase your license at the beginning of your trip, because you are going to need it practically everywhere you drop your line!

The fish you can catch from this pier include speckled trout, sand trout, croaker, sheepshead, and gaff-top catfish. If you’re hungry and can’t wait to clean, filet, and grill your catch, Joe’s Oyster Bar, 207 E Maxan Street in Port Isabel, is located less than a mile from the pier, and they offer a “you catch, we cook” special, serving your fish with fries, coleslaw, and a dinner roll.

Day 4: Paddle’s Down

Kayak fishing is another fun and simple way to catch your bounty from the sea, taking you further out into the sea while providing a serene paddling experience. SPI Sessions Watersports, 5717 Padre Boulevard, offers kayak rentals in three-hour time segments for a very reasonable price. And because you are going out a little further into deeper waters, the variety of fish you can catch grows, now including Spanish mackerel, cobia, and kingfish.

Day 5: Your Fishing Dreams Come True

A deep sea fishing trip is a dream that can easily come true during your stay in South Padre Island with a little help from our friends at Fishing Adventures of South Padre Island. Located at the Sea Ranch Marina and specializing in offshore fishing charters, their excursions can last anywhere from 6 to 12 hours, taking you further out in deep waters with the longer expeditions. Providing marlin trips, tuna trips, and federal water snapper trips (from June 1st to July 31st only), anglers will have the opportunity to catch a large variety of fish and may even catch some sharks!
