How to Get to South Padre Island, TX

South Padre Island has been a popular vacation destination since the bridge connecting it to the mainland (the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway) was constructed in 1954. Many travelers ask, “How do you get to South Padre Island?” Fortunately, you have found your way to SPI Rentals, and we not only offer beautiful vacation rentals but also provide this guide to getting to our island home.

Where Is South Padre Island Located and How Do You Get There?

You can’t figure out how to get to South Padre Island if you don’t know where it is, so our first order of business is to show you exactly where we are located. You will find our island home at the very bottom of our state, at the southernmost tip, which is also about 90 miles north of Mexico. Because of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, which crosses the Laguna Madre and connects us to the mainland, you can drive right across and not be reliant on a ferry or boat.

Flying to South Padre Island: Which Airport Should You Choose?

There are two airports that are close (or relatively close) to SPI: the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (27 miles from SPI) and Valley International Airport (42 miles away from SPI). The Brownsville airport is a hub for American and United Airlines and is best for those looking for a shorter drive. Valley International is also a hub for American and United Airlines, as well as Southwest and Delta, and although it is a bit further away, you have a better chance of finding cheaper flights.

Getting from the Airport to Your South Padre Island Rental

Your best bet would be to book a ride with one of two shuttle services offered in the area: SPI Shuttle or SPI Surf Shuttle. Both companies travel to and from both local airports.

Driving to South Padre Island: Routes and Distances
